One of the most awaited news came in this week for the live music industry- Every ticket sold at anarena or stadium should contain a financial contribution to raise funds for grassroots venues.

But who is MVT?

The Music Venue Trust (MVT) is a UK-based charity founded in 2014 with the mission of  protecting, securing, and improving grassroots music venues across the country. Grassroots music  venues are small to mid-sized spaces where emerging artists get their start, develop their craft, and  connect with audiences. These venues are essential to the cultural ecosystem, nurturing the future  stars of the music industry and serving as community hubs for creativity, diversity, and expression.

What’s the problem faced by GMVs?

Over the years, grassroots venues have faced numerous challenges, including rising rents, noise  complaints, insufficient funding, and competition from larger, corporatised spaces. The COVID-19  pandemic further exacerbated these issues, with many venues struggling to stay afloat. The MVT  advocates for policies and funding to support these vital spaces and ensure their survival. Their  work involves lobbying the government, collaborating with the music industry, and running  campaigns such as #SaveOurVenues, which has raised millions to prevent closures.

Why is Supporting Grassroots Music Venues Crucial?

1. Cultural Innovation

Grassroots venues are the breeding ground for innovation in music. From punk to grime to  indie rock, many revolutionary movements in music originated in small clubs and venues  before gaining mainstream recognition. Without these spaces, new voices and genres would  struggle to emerge.

2. Career Development

These venues are stepping stones for budding artists. Iconic acts like Adele, Arctic  Monkeys, and Ed Sheeran started their careers in small venues. They offer invaluable  performance opportunities and direct audience engagement, allowing artists to grow and  refine their skills.

3. Economic Contribution

The UK music industry contributes billions to the economy, and grassroots venues play a  pivotal role in this ecosystem. They support local businesses like bars, restaurants, and  transportation, creating a ripple effect of economic activity in their communities.

4. Community Building

Grassroots venues are more than just performance spaces; they are community hubs. They  bring people together, celebrate diversity, and provide safe spaces for self-expression. In  smaller towns, they often represent a vital part of the cultural landscape.

And after almost a decade of work, the government has finally given ears, and has urged the  industry to ensure levy for GMVs be included in the ticket prices. So now, it is not anymore the talk  of when, but more about how, that this model will be made sustainable. To add to its merit, with  previous big artists, such as Coldplay and Sam Fender announcing contributions, Katy Perry also  has joined to share 1 pound from every ticket sold in UK to the fund.

The MVT’s work is vital for preserving these spaces and ensuring that music remains a vibrant and  accessible form of art for everyone. Supporting grassroots venues is not just about music—it’s  about safeguarding a cornerstone of cultural identity and community spirit.
